Yugoslav neo-avant-garde art magazines

Yugoslav neo-avant-garde art magazines

The exhibition "The Yugoslav neo-avant-garde art magazines 1960-1990" at the HDD gallery in Zagreb, curated by graphic designer Ana Radovanovic from Belgrade, presents a historical and designer overview of  art magazines created in former Yugoslavia from the '60s to early 90s, along with analysis of the context in which they were created, authors and groups that were behind them, and their interconnections to the local and international level.

The project and exhibition, which were derived from the author's master thesis at the Italian Faculty ISIA Urbino, are consisted of 28 magazines which can be classified in the context of neo-avant-garde art.

A neo-avant-garde art magazine is, among other things, a characteristic periodically published product made by conceptual artists. Unlike many Western examples, whose authors had intentions of commercial production, local magazines were not as much related to the market, and usually not related with official art institutions. They represent independent self-publishing, and are distributed only among artistic circles.
